Townsville New Jobs Recovery

Townsville Jobs ads have recovered significantly during the pandemic.  New Weekly Jobs adverts on Seek, and compiled by TP Human Capital Townsville, reveals Job adverts have improved by over 4 times from their low point in mid April.  Townsville Region has experienced an amazing recovery in new Job Adverts and officially is one of the better performing jobs markets around the state.  This improved performance was forecast in 2017/18, and despite Covid-19, Townsville is performing well.  However there remains challenges and opportunitys in Townsville.

Clayton Cook Managing Director TP Human Capital Townsville said,” we have been saying all through this pandemic that Townsville is in a strong position to recover QUICKER than many other regions.  There are still many challenges and opportunities ahead and recovery is still likely to be gradual and local job adverts are one positive indicator in an economic and health jigsaw puzzle.  There are many other positive indicators.

Mr Cook said,” We’ve been monitoring Stock and Flow Job Adverts for Townsville during the pandemic.  New job adverts peaked in March 2020, before the pandemic hit.  In the past week (and since mid April) we have seen a diversified improvement in job adverts.  From a low of 80 new job adverts in mid April, Townsville has improved to over 350 new job ads in Mid August.  Importantly it’s diversified jobs growth.  Key sectors for new job ads include Trades, NDIS, Other Health positions, Education, Administration, Plant and Machinery Operators, Child Carers, Federal and State government jobs, Chefs and Cooks, Mining Maintenance, Retail Assistants, Automotive Trades, Electricians and Labourers.

Mr Cook said “Four years ago Townsville job adverts were rock bottom, today it’s a different story and the jobs growth is diversified. We and DS Economics raised the strong potential for these conditions as far back as 2017/18.  We hope many people and organisations took advantage of the information and did appropriate training and upskilling.”

Regional Economist Colin Dwyer said “Around regional Queensland Townsville recovery during the pandemic has performed well.  Mackay has performed  better than Townsville and Cairns, but the rate of recovery in new job ads has been better in Townsville.  Cairns new job ads picked up solidly in May but then dropped away in August after Victoria and New South Wales were locked out.

Regional Economist Colin Dwyer said “Townsville Region has a healthy level of significant projects and is better placed than many other regions to recover quicker from Covid restrictions.  There are still challenges and opportunities on the economic horizon.  We still have concerns for when Jobkeeper is adjusted, Banks mortgage arrangements change and any disruption to commercial activity from the looming local and US elections.  The official workforce, participation and unemployment rate for Townsville region are improving.
